About Sukkot
Sukkot is a seven-day autumn festival beginning on the fifteenth of Tishri. It recalls the forty years of wandering in the desert and the harvest. Families build a sukkah, a hut with a roof of branches or reeds through which the sky can be seen, decorate it with fruit, paper chains and children's drawings, and eat their meals in it, and in some families sleep in it too. Every day of the festival, a bundle of palm branch, myrtle and willow, the lulav, is held with an etrog, a citron, and waved in six directions in the synagogue. Guests, called ushpizin, are invited in, both living and, in tradition, the ancestors. Stuffed vegetables, such as stuffed cabbage, are a common dish.
