Traditions of Abidjan

A lagoon city of music and maquis restaurants, famed for attiéké and the Dipri and Fête des Masques.

Abidjan is the economic capital of Côte d'Ivoire and one of the largest French-speaking cities in the world. Many Ivorian peoples, including the Baoulé, Dioula, Bété and Akan, live here. Maquis, open-air restaurants, are the city's meeting places, and music, from zouglou to coupé-décalé, comes out of its neighbourhoods.

Masks and music

In the west of the country, the Dan people have masked dances to mark initiations and festivals, and in Abidjan, a festival of Ebrié communities celebrates fishing and the lagoon. Zouglou music grew from student parties in the 1990s. Weddings use Baoulé gold weights and cloth. The Fête des Generations is a coastal festival.

At the table

Attiéké, fermented cassava couscous, with grilled fish and onions, is the signature dish. Kedjenou is a slow-cooked chicken stew, and alloco, fried plantain, is a common snack. Garba, tuna with attiéké, is a street lunch. Bangui, palm wine, is poured at celebrations.
