Traditions of Andorra la Vella

A Pyrenean capital where the Fires of Sant Joan are lit on the mountains and the Marratxa dance is performed.

Andorra la Vella is the highest capital in Europe, in a valley in the Pyrenees. The principality has its own Catalan culture, with a feudal tradition of two co-princes. On the night of 23 June, Andorrans light bonfires, the Falles, in the mountains, and men carry flaming torches down to the town.

Fires of Sant Joan and the contrapàs

On Sant Joan, communities carry burning poles to bonfires, in a tradition recognised by UNESCO as the Summer Solstice Fire Festivals of the Pyrenees. The contrapàs is a dance in which couples meet and part in a circle. On National Day, 8 September, the Virgin of Meritxell is honoured.

At the table

Escudella, a stew of meats and vegetables, trinxat, cabbage and potato with bacon, and coques, flatbreads, are mountain foods. Cured meats and cheeses come from the valleys. Cream cakes, such as the casadielles, a sweet turnover of walnut, are made. Cava is drunk at festivals.
