Traditions of Arusha

The gateway to Kilimanjaro and the Serengeti, close to Maasai land and the traditions of its warriors.

Arusha lies at the foot of Mount Meru and is the safari capital of Tanzania. The Maasai, a pastoral people, live in the lands around it and keep strong traditions of cattle herding, red cloth and beadwork. Their ceremonies mark the passage from boy to warrior to elder, with songs, dances and long walks.

Maasai life

Maasai men leap high in the adumu, a jumping dance, to demonstrate strength. Beadwork in coded colours is made by women, and signals age and marital status. The Eunoto, a ceremony for warriors becoming senior men, includes shaving the hair and a feast. Visitors can be invited to a boma, a family homestead, with permission.

At the table

The Maasai traditionally drink milk and blood from cattle and eat meat at festivals. Ugali, maize porridge, nyama choma, grilled meat, and mchemsho, a vegetable stew, are widespread meals. Chai, sweet milk tea with ginger, is offered everywhere. Swahili pilau is served at celebrations.
