Traditions of Bangui

The capital of the Central African Republic on the Ubangi river, home of Baka and Aka forest music.

Bangui sits on the Ubangi river on the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The country is the home of the Aka and Baka forest people, whose polyphonic singing is recognised as among the world's richest. The Sango language is a national means of communication.

Forest music

The Aka sing in yodelling polyphony, with each voice weaving its own line, in the forest during net hunts and in ceremonies for the spirit Jengi. Their music has inspired musicians elsewhere. In Bangui, church choirs and traditional dancing take place on weekends.

At the table

Cassava, in the form of a paste, is the staple, served with a stew of caterpillars, fish, or meat. Gozo, cassava paste, with a sauce of peanut or leaf, is the typical meal. Palm wine and sorghum beer are drunk. Honey is gathered from the forest by the Aka.

Signature traditions of Bangui

Also part of it, and being written: Aka pygmies (The forest people.), Sango language (The national language.), Gozo (The cassava paste.).
