Traditions of Bratislava

A Danube capital with a hilltop castle, wine taverns and a Christmas market, close to Vienna.

Bratislava is the capital of Slovakia and sits on the Danube close to Austria and Hungary. For centuries, Hungarian kings were crowned here. Slovak traditions are strongest in the countryside, with folk costumes, dance, and the pagan customs of spring, such as the drowning of Morena, the winter goddess, in a river.

Spring and Christmas

At the end of Lent, children carry a straw effigy of Morena to a stream and throw it in to chase out the winter. At Christmas Eve, families break wafers with honey, and eat mushroom soup and fried carp. Folk festivals show costumes embroidered with floral designs, fujara flute playing and the horal dances.

At the table

Bryndzové halušky, potato dumplings with sheep cheese and bacon, is the national dish. Kapustnica, a sauerkraut soup, is made at Christmas, and trdelník is a sweet baked on a spit. Slivovica is a plum brandy, and wine from the Small Carpathians is served in cellars. Lokše, potato pancakes, are filled with goose.

Signature traditions of Bratislava

Also part of it, and being written: Bryndzové halušky (The national dish.), Kapustnica (The Christmas soup.), Marzanna (The winter goddess.).
