Traditions of Cape Town

A city under Table Mountain whose Cape Malay quarter keeps the Tweede Nuwe Jaar parade and a spicy cooking tradition.

Cape Town grew as a Dutch supply station and holds a rich mix of Khoi, San, Malay, Dutch, British and Xhosa heritage. The Bo-Kaap, painted in bright colours, is the home of the Cape Malay community, descendants of enslaved people from Indonesia, India and Africa. Their cooking and festivals are a pride of the city.

Kaapse Klopse

On 2 January, the Tweede Nuwe Jaar, or Second New Year, troupes in satin costumes and painted faces march to banjos, whistles and drums in the Cape Town Minstrel Carnival. The tradition began as a day off for enslaved people. The Cape Malay choir tradition, Nederlandsliedjies, is sung at weddings.

At the table

Bobotie, a spiced minced meat dish baked with egg custard, and bredie, a slow stew, show the Malay influence. Koeksisters, syrup-dipped plaited doughnuts, are sold on Sundays. Samoosas, roti and a braai, a barbecue, bring families together. Rooibos tea is the local drink.

Signature traditions of Cape Town

Also part of it, and being written: Cape Town Minstrel Carnival (The Kaapse Klopse parade.), Cape Malays (The cooking.), Bobotie (The spiced mince dish.), Braai (The barbecue.), Rooibos (The red bush tea.).
