Traditions of Cebu City

The oldest Spanish city in the Philippines, where the Sinulog procession honours the child Jesus each January.

Cebu City is the oldest city in the Philippines, where Magellan landed in 1521 and the first church was founded. The Santo Nino de Cebu image, said to have been given to the local queen, is venerated in the Basilica. The city's faith, dance and food are tied to this image and to the sea.

Sinulog

On the third Sunday of January, dancers in bright costumes, drums and floats parade through the streets in the Sinulog, a dance step of forward and back that echoes river flow. Crowds chant Pit Senyor, calling on the Santo Nino. Hours earlier, a procession and mass fill the basilica and its plaza.

At the table

Lechon, whole roast pig stuffed with lemongrass, is Cebu's pride and a feast dish across the Philippines. Puso, rice cooked in woven coconut leaf, is eaten with grilled meat. Dried mangoes, otap pastries and danggit, dried fish, are the city's gifts for visitors.

Signature traditions of Cebu City

Also part of it, and being written: Santo Niño de Cebú (The venerated image.), Lechon (Roast pig of Filipino feasts.).
