Traditions of Copán

A town beside a great Maya city, where the corn, coffee and the Day of the Dead keep ancient rhythms.

Copán Ruinas is a small town in western Honduras near the ruins of Copán, a Classic Maya city with remarkable stone sculpture and a hieroglyphic stairway. The Ch'orti' Maya live in the region. Modern Honduran customs include the Feria Juniana in June, with parades and dances, and the Garifuna punta.

The Maya and the feria

Ch'orti' farmers plant corn with ritual, offering the first fruit to the earth, and observe the Maya calendar. In Honduras, the Day of the Dead is spent in cemeteries, with candles and flowers. On 24 December, the Nochebuena meal begins in the evening with tamales and ponche, a hot fruit drink.

At the table

Baleadas, wheat tortillas with beans, cheese and cream, are the national food. Sopa de caracol, conch soup with coconut milk, and plátanos fritos are common. Coffee of Copán is among the country's best. Tamales are made at Christmas, wrapped in banana leaf.

Signature traditions of Copán
