Traditions of Djenné

A river town with the largest mud-brick building in the world, replastered by the whole community each spring.

Djenné is an island town on the Bani river with a Great Mosque of banco, mud, the largest mud-brick building in the world. The town was a major trade city for gold, salt and scholars. Its houses are built in the same Sudano-Sahelian style, with wooden beams that stick out of the walls.

The Crépissage

Each year, after the rainy season, the entire town takes part in the replastering of the mosque with fresh mud, in a festival called the Crépissage. The old men mix the mud and young men climb the beams. Women bring food and water for the workers, and drumming and singing accompany it. The Monday market fills the square.

At the table

Rice, millet and fish from the Bani river are the staples. Tigadèguèna, a peanut stew, and fonio are served at feasts. Milk, curd and fresh butter come from Fulani herders. Bread from wood ovens, and tea with plenty of sugar, are offered to guests.

Signature traditions of Djenné

Also part of it, and being written: Great Mosque of Djenné (The mud mosque.), Bogolanfini (The mudcloth of Mali, painted with fermented mud.), Fonio (An ancient West African grain served at feasts.).
