Traditions of Djerba

An island with one of the oldest Jewish communities in the Mediterranean and a pilgrimage at La Ghriba.

Djerba is a Tunisian island of white houses, palm trees and potters. A Jewish community has lived here for about two thousand years, and Muslims, Ibadis and Jews share crafts and markets. The island is famed for La Ghriba synagogue, olive oil, pottery and woven cloth.

La Ghriba pilgrimage

Each year at Lag BaOmer, Jews from Tunisia and abroad come to the La Ghriba synagogue for a pilgrimage with processions, candles and prayers. Women write wishes on boiled eggs and place them in a grotto. The Muslim community shares the day. Weddings use a ritual of henna and a procession with a bride on a decorated litter.

At the table

Djerba cooking includes brik, fish dishes and a rich meal of couscous with fish. Jewish families make pomegranate-flavoured dishes, and boukha, a fig spirit, is distilled in the old Jewish quarter. Local dates, olives and spicy harissa are traditional. Fresh fish and octopus come from the island's own fishing boats.
