Traditions of Freetown

A harbour city founded by freed people, home of Krio culture and the Bondo and Poro societies.

Freetown was founded in 1792 as a settlement for freed Africans and has a distinct Krio people, whose language is spoken across Sierra Leone. Its traditions include the Easter Monday regatta and Krio feasts. Poro and Bondo, the secret societies for men and women, continue to guide initiation and community.

Krio festivals and societies

Krio families gather at Easter and Christmas, and wear the matching cloth, aso ebi, a custom shared with Nigerians. The Hunting Society and the Bondo society hold dances. The Easter Monday Regatta draws crowds to the shore and the Lumley beach.

At the table

Jollof rice, cassava leaf stew, and groundnut soup are the classics. Fufu is eaten with okra sauce. Akara, fried bean cakes, are Sunday breakfast, and Krio fish pepper soup, with fresh fish, is a favourite. Palm wine is drunk. Fresh fish is bought each morning at the waterfront, and the evening meal is usually shared by the whole household.
