Traditions of Galway

A city of the west where Irish is still spoken, oysters are celebrated in September, and traditional music pours from every pub.

Galway sits at the edge of the Gaeltacht, the Irish-speaking region, and is known as the cultural capital of Ireland. The city hosts the Galway International Oyster Festival, the Galway Races and the Arts Festival. The Claddagh ring, with two hands clasping a heart, comes from a fishing village here.

Oysters, the Claddagh and the sea

In late September, the Oyster Festival opens with an oyster opening contest and a gala dinner. The Claddagh ring is worn with the heart pointing outwards for those free to love, and inwards for those whose hearts are taken. The Galway hooker, a traditional sailing boat of dark sails, races in Cruinniú na mBád.

At the table

Galway Bay is known for oysters and mussels, eaten with brown soda bread and a pint of stout. Seafood chowder, smoked salmon and Connemara lamb are common. At Hallowe'en, families bake barmbrack, and at Christmas, a plum pudding is lit with brandy.
