Traditions of Ghadames

The pearl of the desert, an oasis town with whitewashed houses where women moved across the rooftops.

Ghadames is an old oasis town on the edge of the Sahara, where the Amazigh, or Berber, inhabitants built a town of mud and palm, with covered lanes to keep out the heat. Families once lived in two parts of the house: men on the ground floor and women on the rooftops, linked by a network of terraces.

The town of terraces

Women painted their homes with red and white motifs of the sun and moon, and used the rooftop terraces to visit each other. A spring festival celebrates the Ghadames oasis with processions and a shared meal. Local dress and the Tuareg speak to ties across the Sahara.

At the table

Meals use dates, barley, lamb and desert vegetables. Bazin is a shared dish, and bread is baked in the ground in a sand oven, called tagella. Mint tea is served after the meal, and dates are always offered. The oasis spring was shared by the households by the hour, a custom measured by a water clock.

Signature traditions of Ghadames

Also part of it, and being written: Ghadames (The oasis town.), Tuareg people (The nomads of the Sahara.), Taguella (Sand-baked bread.).
