Traditions of Granada

A colonial city beside Lake Nicaragua, where La Purísima altars and a folkloric Gigantona parade mark the year.

Granada is one of the oldest colonial cities in the Americas, founded in 1524, with yellow and terracotta buildings. Nicaraguan festivals blend Spanish and Indigenous practice. La Purísima, in early December, celebrates the Virgin Mary with house altars and the cry Quién causa tanta alegría? and the answer La concepción de María.

La Purísima and El Güegüense

On 7 December, families set up altars to the Virgin, and neighbours visit to sing and receive sweets and fruit. El Güegüense, a satirical street theatre piece from colonial times, with masks and dance, mocks Spanish officials and is on UNESCO's list. Palo de Mayo, a spirited dance, comes from the Caribbean coast.

At the table

Gallo pinto, red beans and rice, nacatamal, a large steamed tamale, and vigorón, yucca with pork crackling and cabbage salad, are classics. Quesillo, cheese and tortilla with cream, is served in a plastic bag. Pinolillo, a corn and cocoa drink, and Flor de Caña rum are the national drinks.

Signature traditions of Granada

Also part of it, and being written: El Güegüense (The play.), Immaculate Conception (The festival.), Gallo pinto (The rice and beans.), Nacatamal (The tamale.).
