Traditions of Ilha de Moçambique

A small island of the Swahili coast, once a Portuguese capital, with mosque, church and temple in one small place.

Ilha de Moçambique is a narrow coral island joined to the mainland by a bridge, and gave the country its name. Arab, Swahili, Indian and Portuguese influences meet here, from the stone town of the Portuguese to the thatched Makuti quarter. The people of the Makua speak and wear musiro, a white face paste made from the roots of a tree.

Mixed coast culture

Makua women apply musiro to protect their skin and beautify themselves. Tufo, a Swahili dance by women in silk with drums and singing, is danced at weddings and Islamic festivals. Muslims keep the Maulid and the island's Hindus hold Diwali, while Catholics honour saints in processions.

At the table

Seafood in coconut milk, matapa, cassava leaves cooked with coconut and peanut, and xima, a maize porridge, are main foods. Prawns, grilled with piri-piri, are a coastal speciality. Sweets are made of coconut, and tea with spices is brewed for guests.
