Traditions of Kano

An ancient Hausa trading city with a walled old town, dye pits and the Durbar horse festival.

Kano has been a trading city of the Sahel for a thousand years. The old walled city is a centre of trade in leather, cloth and indigo. The Hausa people, the largest group, keep traditions of emirate ceremony, with the Emir of Kano at the head, and the Durbar festival at Eid, when horsemen in turbans ride in procession.

Durbar and dye

At the Eid Durbar, the emir's cavalry parade in colourful robes with ceremonial swords. Horses are decorated with embroidered cloth. The Kofar Mata dye pits, in use since the fifteenth century, colour cloth in deep indigo, using a mixture of natural dyes and fermenting vats.

At the table

Tuwo shinkafa, a rice pudding, with miyan kuka, baobab leaf soup, is a classic Hausa meal. Fura da nono is millet balls in fermented milk, and kilishi is spiced dried beef. Kunun tsamiya is a fermented millet drink. Cola nut and kola are shared in welcome.
