Traditions of Lamu

A car-free Swahili island town with dhows, carved doors and a famed festival of the Prophet's birthday.

Lamu is the oldest continuously inhabited Swahili settlement in Kenya, a World Heritage Site. Narrow lanes lined with coral stone houses, carved doors and wooden balconies are used by donkeys and people on foot. The island has long been a centre of Islamic learning and Swahili poetry.

Maulidi and the dhow

Each year Lamu hosts the Maulidi, a celebration of the Prophet's birthday, with weeks of prayer and poetry, and processions to the Riyadha Mosque. Dhow races and sailing tied to the winds of the monsoon are the trade of the island. Lamu is also home to an annual cultural festival where donkey races and swimming contests are held.

At the table

Swahili cuisine uses coconut, tamarind, cardamom and cloves. Biryani, pilau, samaki wa kupaka, grilled fish with coconut sauce, and mkate wa mayai are specialities. Sweet kaimati, deep-fried dumplings in syrup, and tea in small cups are often served. Fishermen sell their catch at the quay.
