Traditions of Lilongwe

The capital of Malawi, close to the homeland of the Chewa and their secret society of Gule Wamkulu.

Lilongwe is the capital of Malawi, in the heart of Chewa country. The Chewa and neighbouring peoples keep the Gule Wamkulu, the great dance, a ritual of masked dancers who represent spirits, animals and ancestors. The tradition is on UNESCO's list and marks initiations and funerals.

Gule Wamkulu

Masked dancers, nyau, wearing costumes of cloth, straw and wood, appear at the end of the initiation of boys and after the death of a chief. The characters range from animals to ancestors and may play comic or fearsome roles. Women and uninitiated people watch from a distance. The dance is accompanied by drums.

At the table

Nsima, a thick maize porridge, is eaten with relishes such as beans, greens, fish and chicken. Chambo, a fish from Lake Malawi, is grilled or fried. Thobwa is a sweet, lightly fermented maize drink, and sugarcane is chewed. Roasted maize and groundnuts are snack foods.
