Traditions of Livingstone

The town beside Victoria Falls, where the Lozi Kuomboka and Tonga rain rites show the river's place in Zambian life.

Livingstone stands near the great falls the Tonga and Lozi call Mosi-oa-Tunya, the smoke that thunders. People of the Tonga, Lozi and other groups keep ceremonies tied to the river, the rains and the harvest. The nearby Barotse floodplain hosts one of Africa's most spectacular ceremonies, the Kuomboka.

Kuomboka and the rains

At the Kuomboka, held at the end of the rainy season, the Lozi king, the Litunga, moves from the flooded plain to higher ground on a great royal barge, paddled by hundreds of men in red, with drums and a procession of canoes. In the Tonga country the Lwiindi ceremony prays for rain and offers thanks for the harvest.

At the table

Nshima, a thick maize porridge, is the heart of every meal, eaten by hand with relishes of greens, beans, kapenta (small dried fish) and meat. Chibwantu, a fermented maize drink, is shared at gatherings. Mopane worms and Zambezi bream are local delights.

Signature traditions of Livingstone

Also part of it, and being written: Kuomboka (The Lozi ceremony.), Lwiindi (The Tonga ceremony.), Nshima (The Zambian staple.).
