Traditions of Luanda

Angola's coastal capital, where kizomba, semba and a Lenten Carnival unite old African and Portuguese rhythms.

Luanda is a sea city of fortresses, big avenues and busy markets, the capital of Angola. Its culture mixes Kimbundu, Portuguese and many other influences. Semba, a music of drums and guitars, is the root of Brazilian samba, and kizomba, a slower dance, is now danced all over the world.

Carnival and kizomba

Luanda Carnival, held before Lent, has groups from neighbourhoods parade in themed costumes with drums and stories about local life. The kizomba dance is danced in close embrace to a smooth, bass-heavy beat. Weddings include a ritual of introduction, called the alembamento, in which the groom's family offers gifts to the bride's.

At the table

Muamba de galinha, chicken stewed in palm oil with okra, is a national dish, served with funge, a cassava or corn porridge. Calulu, a fish or meat stew with dried fish and vegetables, is a feast dish. Cachupa and grilled fish are common on the coast. Kissangua is a corn drink.
