Traditions of Mogadishu

An old Indian Ocean port of Somalia, with a tradition of oral poetry, camel milk and spiced tea.

Mogadishu has been a port city for around a thousand years, trading with Arabia, India and Persia. Somalia is a nation of poets: oral poetry carries history, law, love and humour. Pastoral traditions shape the cuisine, and strong tea with spices and sweet pastries are part of daily hospitality.

Poets and weddings

Poetry, gabay, is composed in strict forms and recited by heart. Marriage customs include the henna night and a lively dance, dhaanto, by women. Eid and Ramadan are family-focused times, with evenings of visits, and the independence days, 26 June and 1 July, are marked by parades.

At the table

Bariis iskukaris, spiced rice with meat, and canjeero, a thin sourdough pancake eaten at breakfast with sesame oil and sugar, are classic. Suqaar, small pieces of meat fried with vegetables, is a favourite. Shaah, tea with cardamom, cloves and cinnamon, and camel milk are served to guests.
