Traditions of Monrovia

Africa's oldest republic's capital, with the heritage of freed Americans, Poro masks and a rice-focused kitchen.

Monrovia was founded by formerly enslaved Americans in the 1820s and named for President James Monroe. The country's culture combines their heritage with that of the Kpelle, Bassa, Gio, Mano and other peoples. The Poro and Sande societies initiate young men and women in sacred forest schools.

Poro, Sande and the masks

In Sande, girls are initiated and taught by elders, and the Sowei mask, worn by the guiding woman, is one of the few African masks worn by women. Poro, the men's equivalent, uses masks for spirits. Many Liberians keep the Independence Day, on 26 July, and Decoration Day in March, when graves are cleaned.

At the table

Rice and soup are the base: palm butter soup with chicken or fish, and potato greens, with pepper. Fufu and dumboy, pounded cassava, are common. Jollof is made at parties, and ginger beer and palm wine are drunk at festivals. Kala, a fried dough ball, is a street snack.
