Traditions of Montréal

A city of festivals and bagels, where French, English and many diasporas share summers of jazz and winters of snow.

Montréal is a French-speaking city of two million on an island in the St Lawrence. Its summers are filled with festivals, from the International Jazz Festival to Just for Laughs, and its Jewish, Italian, Greek and Portuguese communities have shaped distinct neighbourhoods. The Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day, on 24 June, is Québec's national holiday.

Festivals and Fête nationale

On 24 June, the Fête nationale du Québec is celebrated with bonfires, music and the blue-and-white flag. The Jazz Festival fills the Quartier des spectacles with free concerts. Moving Day, 1 July, is a custom in which a large number of leases end and families move on the same day. Winter sees the Fête des Neiges.

At the table

Montreal bagels, hand-rolled and baked in wood-fired ovens with honey water, and smoked meat sandwiches at Schwartz's are known worldwide. Poutine, tourtière, and maple treats are common. Markets such as Jean-Talon sell local cheese and produce. On New Year's Day many families still gather for a long meal of tourtière, a custom brought from rural Québec.

Signature traditions of Montréal

Also part of it, and being written: Fête nationale du Québec (The national day.), Montreal-style bagel (The bagel.), Montreal smoked meat (The sandwich.).
