Traditions of Naples

A noisy, musical city of pizza, nativity crèches and the liquefaction of the blood of San Gennaro.

Naples is among the oldest and most crowded cities in Europe and is often called the birthplace of pizza. Its traditions mix Catholic devotion, superstition, music and food. The city's streets are decorated with flags, saints' shrines and, at Christmas, elaborate nativity scenes made with tiny figures.

Gennaro and the presepe

Three times a year, crowds gather at the cathedral to see if the blood of San Gennaro liquefies, a sign of good fortune. Via San Gregorio Armeno is lined with craft shops selling nativity figures, some of famous people. Neapolitan song, from Santa Lucia to O Sole Mio, is part of the city's identity.

At the table

Pizza napoletana, with a puffy edge baked in a wood oven, is recognised by UNESCO as an art. Spaghetti with clams, sfogliatella pastry, babà soaked in rum and coffee with a drop of sugar, caffè sospeso, offered to a stranger in need, are loved. Lemons from Amalfi flavour the limoncello.
