Traditions of Nizwa

The old capital of the interior of Oman, with a Friday goat market, a great fort and a pottery tradition.

Nizwa lies at the foot of the Hajar mountains and was for centuries a centre of Ibadi scholarship and the seat of imams. Its round fort is a landmark, and the souq is famous for silver, daggers (khanjar), dates and pottery. Omani hospitality, with coffee and halwa, is a point of pride.

Market and fort

Every Friday morning, goats and cattle are auctioned in a ring in the souq, with sellers walking the animals in a circle. Silver workers make the khanjar, the curved dagger worn at celebrations. Omani coffee, kahwa, is served with dates to guests as a sign of respect and is poured by the host in small cups.

At the table

Shuwa is lamb marinated in spices and slow-cooked underground in a sealed pit for a day or two, served at Eid. Omani halwa is a glossy sweet of sugar, rose water, saffron and nuts, stirred in copper pots. Fresh dates from the oasis and local honey are common.
