Traditions of Saint-Louis

An island city at the mouth of the Senegal river, with a jazz festival and a fishermen's rite.

Saint-Louis was the capital of French West Africa and later of Senegal. It is a town of colonial buildings with wrought iron balconies on a narrow island. The city has a vibrant tradition of jazz and of its signares, the elegant women of mixed families who ran trade and kept lavish festivals.

Jazz and the fishermen

The Saint-Louis Jazz Festival, held every spring, brings players from Africa and the world to its streets. Fishermen, whose colourful pirogues line the Langue de Barbarie spit, perform a ritual blessing before the fishing season. The Fanals, a lantern procession at Christmas, is a unique custom, with huge decorated lanterns carried in parade.

At the table

Thieboudienne is said to have been invented here. The local variant is made with fish bought fresh from the pirogues. Women of the island sell fried fish and sweet dishes, such as thiakry, a millet porridge with curd and sugar. Tea is poured thrice at every meal.
