Traditions of Takayama

A mountain town of old merchant houses, famed for its spring and autumn festivals of carved floats.

Takayama sits in the Japanese Alps and kept its Edo-period streets of dark wooden houses and sake breweries. It is known for two festivals, in April and October, in which elaborate floats with mechanical puppets are paraded. The craft of the town is carpentry, and carpenters from here once built temples across Japan.

The Takayama Matsuri

Eleven or twelve yatai floats, richly carved and lacquered, are pulled through the old town at each festival, with the karakuri puppets performing on top. In the evening they are lit with lanterns. Residents spend the year preparing and the floats are kept in storehouses through the rest of the year.

At the table

Hida beef, sold as skewers in the morning market, and miso grilled on a magnolia leaf, hoba miso, are local specials. Takayama ramen is a light soy broth with thin noodles. The town's sake breweries hang a ball of cedar branches, a sugidama, to show that the new sake is ready.
