Traditions of Belgrade

A city at the meeting of the Sava and the Danube, with the slava family saint's feast and floating river bars.

Belgrade is the capital of Serbia and a city of fortress, rivers and late nights. Serbian Orthodox families keep the slava, the celebration of a family's patron saint, an inherited feast recognised by UNESCO. Hospitality, rakija and grilled meat are central to the culture.

Slava and Christmas

On the day of their saint, families bring a slavski kolač, a ritual bread, and koljivo, boiled wheat, to the church to be blessed, then host guests for a day of food. At Orthodox Christmas, families bring in oak branches, badnjak, and burn them on Christmas Eve. A coin is baked in the česnica, the Christmas bread.

At the table

Ćevapi, grilled minced meat, pljeskavica, a burger, and sarma, cabbage rolls, are classic. Kajmak, a clotted cream, is spread on bread. Burek, a flaky pie, is breakfast with yoghurt. Rakija, plum brandy, is the toast, with the call Živeli. Ajvar is made in autumn.
