Traditions of Brazzaville

The Congo river capital, where the sapeurs dress in elegant suits and rumba music grew up.

Brazzaville sits across the river from Kinshasa, the two being the closest capitals in the world. The city is known for La Sape, the Society of Ambianceurs and Persons of Elegance, in which men dress with great style and strict manners. Congolese rumba, recognised by UNESCO, was born on these two banks.

La Sape and rumba

Sapeurs wear brightly coloured suits, polished shoes and hats, and follow a code of gentlemanly manners and dignity. They parade at festivals and in the neighbourhood of Bacongo. Rumba is played on guitars, with a call and response of voices and a lively dance at the end of each song.

Poulet à la moambe, chicken in palm butter sauce, and saka saka, cassava leaves, are classics. Fufu from cassava, and fish from the river, such as capitaine, are staples. Chikwangue, fermented cassava bread, is steamed in leaves. Guests are offered palm wine.
