Traditions of Conakry

The capital of Guinea on a narrow peninsula, a home of the djembe drum and the dances of the Mandinka.

Conakry is the capital of Guinea, a country rich in music. The djembe, a goblet drum played with bare hands, spread from the Mandinka heartland of Guinea and Mali. Guinean ballets, such as Les Ballets Africains, brought drum and dance to the world. The coast has its own Susu and Fula communities.

Djembe and dance

The djembe, made of carved wood and goatskin, speaks with three notes: bass, tone and slap. In a drum circle, the master drummer calls changes and the dancers respond. Mande culture has the griots, or jeli, who recite genealogies and epics such as Sundiata. Weddings involve a procession and a share of kola nuts.

At the table

Riz gras, rice with meat and vegetables, and sauce feuille, cassava leaf sauce with fish or meat, are common. Fish is grilled fresh from the beach. Fonio, a small grain, is served at feasts. Bissap and ginger juice are sold in the street, and tea is poured thrice.

Signature traditions of Conakry

Also part of it, and being written: Djembe (The drum.), Sundiata Keita (The epic hero.), Fonio (The grain.).
