Traditions of Gaborone

The capital of Botswana, where the kgotla, the village meeting place, shapes public life and seswaa is served at weddings.

Gaborone is a young capital in the south-east of Botswana, home to Tswana families whose traditions of consensus run through society. The kgotla, a traditional court and public assembly under a tree, is where chiefs hear people and where laws are discussed. Botswana is also home to San communities, with a deep knowledge of the Kalahari.

Kgotla and Botswana Day

At the kgotla, men and women may speak openly before the chief, a custom that inspires national democracy. Weddings include a bride-price negotiation called patlo. Setswana music, with songs such as dikgafela, is performed at harvest, and the Maitisong Festival in Gaborone brings drama and dance.

At the table

Seswaa, boiled beef or goat pounded until shredded, is the festive dish, served with bogobe, a sorghum porridge, or with pap. Morogo, wild spinach, and phane, mopane worms, are eaten in season. Ginger beer and bojalwa, sorghum beer, are shared at gatherings.

Signature traditions of Gaborone

Also part of it, and being written: Seswaa (The pounded meat dish.), Tswana people (The people.), Phane (The mopane worm.).
