Traditions of George Town

A Malaysian port city of mixed Malay, Chinese, Indian and Peranakan traditions, famous for hawker food.

George Town on Penang island was founded by the British in 1786 and became a trading city of many peoples. Its old quarter, with clan houses, shophouses and temples, is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Chinese, Malay, Indian and mixed Peranakan families have shaped a cuisine and festival calendar that is unlike anywhere else.

A shared calendar

Chinese New Year, Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Deepavali and Christmas are all public holidays, and neighbours visit each other in turn. At Thaipusam, Hindu devotees carry kavadi, decorated frames, in a procession to the hilltop temple. The Chinese clan jetties are rows of wooden houses over the sea.

At the table

Penang is Malaysia's food capital: char kway teow, assam laksa, nasi kandar with rich curry gravy, cendol and Peranakan nyonya dishes. Hawker centres open from early morning until midnight, and locals argue fondly about which stall is best. Kopi, strong coffee with condensed milk, starts the day.

Signature traditions of George Town

Also part of it, and being written: Chinese New Year (The lunar new year in Chinese communities.), Hari Raya Aidilfitri (The Malaysian Eid.), Peranakan cuisine (The cooking of Straits Chinese families.), Char kway teow (A stir-fried rice noodle dish.).
