Traditions of Jeonju

The home of bibimbap and a hanok village, regarded in Korea as the capital of traditional food.

Jeonju is a city in the south-west of Korea, famed for its cuisine, paper making and music. Its hanok village holds around 700 old houses, and the city is regarded as the birthplace of bibimbap, a bowl of rice with seasoned vegetables and gochujang. It is also the home of pansori, sung storytelling, and the Jeonju Hanji paper craft.

Food, paper and song

The Jeonju bibimbap is made with many seasonal vegetables, sprouts, raw beef and a glossy egg yolk. The hanji, mulberry paper, is made by hand and used for doors, lamps and fans. Pansori, a one-singer drum-accompanied epic, is performed at an annual international festival and is on UNESCO's list.

At the table

Meals in Jeonju are famously large: tables are covered with dozens of side dishes. Makgeolli, cloudy rice wine, comes with free food in many houses. Choco pie is sold here as a snack, as are pears and walnut pastries, and kongnamul gukbap, bean sprout rice soup, is the usual morning meal.
