Traditions of Kanazawa

A castle town on the Sea of Japan with gold leaf craft, a samurai quarter and an elegant tea culture.

Kanazawa escaped war damage and kept its samurai houses, geisha districts and craft workshops. The Maeda clan, rich in rice, spent on art, and the city is known for gold leaf, lacquer, Kutani porcelain and Kaga yuzen silk painting. Its gardens, notably Kenrokuen, are among the finest in Japan.
