Traditions of Lyon

The gastronomic capital of France, home of the bouchon restaurant and the December Fête des Lumières.

Lyon, at the meeting of the Rhône and the Saône, is known for its silk weaving and for a cooking tradition once led by women, the mères lyonnaises. The traditional restaurant, the bouchon, serves hearty plates in a warm room. Each December, the city is lit with candles and light shows in the Fête des Lumières.
