Traditions of Madurai

A temple city built around the Meenakshi shrine, where a divine wedding is re-enacted every spring.

Madurai is one of the oldest living cities in India, centred on the Meenakshi Amman Temple with its tall painted gateways. The streets around the temple follow the shape of a lotus, and festivals are timed to the Tamil months. Jasmine garlands, brass lamps and early morning temple music mark ordinary days here.

The Chithirai festival

In April and May the city celebrates the marriage of Meenakshi and Sundareswarar, with processions and a chariot festival. A second event, the arrival of the god Kallazhagar into the Vaigai river, draws crowds from the surrounding villages. Pongal in January and the Teppam float festival bring lamps to the temple tank.

At the table

Madurai is known for idli served with spicy chutneys, kari dosai with minced meat, jigarthanda, a cold milk and almond gum drink, and the banana leaf meal. Night stalls sell parotta with salna until late. Temple prasadam includes pongal and sweet rice.

Signature traditions of Madurai

Also part of it, and being written: Jigarthanda (The city's cold milk and ice cream drink.), Meenakshi Temple (The central temple and its daily rituals.).
