Traditions of Minsk

The capital of Belarus, where Kupalle midsummer rites and the straw-woven crafts keep old Slavic custom alive.

Minsk is a city of broad avenues and green parks, with a strong tradition of rural life in the countryside. The Slavic midsummer, Kupalle, on the night of 6 to 7 July, features bonfires, wreaths and a fern flower legend. Straw weaving and linen work are old Belarusian crafts.

Kupalle and the harvest

On Kupalle night, young people jump over bonfires and set floral wreaths on the river. Legends say that a magical fern blooms at midnight. At the end of the harvest, the Dazhynki festival celebrates the farmers with sheaves and a wreath. Straw spiders hang over the table at Christmas.

At the table

Draniki, potato pancakes with sour cream, are the national dish. Machanka, a stew of pork in sauce, is eaten with pancakes, and babka, a potato bake, is served. Kolduny, stuffed dumplings, and krambambulya, a honey spirit, are traditional. Rye bread is eaten with salt.
