Traditions of Porto

A northern river city of port wine, tiled churches and the São João festival, in which people tap each other with plastic hammers.

Porto, on the Douro, gives its name to port wine, which is aged in the cellars across the river at Vila Nova de Gaia. Its tradition is more reserved than Lisbon's but its festival of São João, on the night of 23 June, is one of the liveliest in Europe, when the whole city is on the street until dawn.

On the night of 23 June, people eat grilled sardines, hang basil and garlic flowers from windows, light balloons and release them, and tap each other lightly on the head with leeks or plastic hammers. At midnight, there are fireworks over the river. Fresh wine, and caldo verde, kale soup, are served at stalls.

At the table

Francesinha, a sandwich of meats and cheese covered in a sauce of beer and tomato, and tripas à moda do Porto, tripe with white beans, are famous dishes. Pastel de nata, the custard tart, appears in cafes. Port wine, tawny or ruby, is sipped after meals.
