Traditions of Pristina

The capital of Kosovo, with Albanian songs of the lahuta, hospitality and flija baked under a hot lid.

Pristina is a young and lively capital, with a mix of Albanian, Serbian, Turkish and Roma heritage. Albanian customs of hospitality, besa and the telling of epics to the lahuta, a one-string fiddle, are cherished. Kosovo's Independence Day, on 17 February, is celebrated with flags and music.

Songs and hospitality

Rhapsodes sing legends of heroes, with the lahuta, at gatherings. A guest is always offered coffee, raki and sweets. Weddings are many-day events with dancing, the wearing of dimije, the traditional baggy trousers, and the gift of money to the couple.

At the table

Flija, a dish of many thin layers of dough cooked under a metal lid called a sač, and served with yoghurt, is a feast food. Pite, a pie, tavë, a baked dish, and sarma, cabbage rolls, are eaten widely. Baklava and tulumba are sweets. Macedonian-style ajvar is also a part of autumn.

Signature traditions of Pristina

Also part of it, and being written: Flija (The layered dish.), Albanian wedding (The wedding customs.), Rakia (The fruit brandy offered to guests in Albanian homes.).
