Traditions of Santiago de Cuba

The cradle of son and the Caribbean Carnival of July, with the Virgin of Charity as patron of Cuba.

Santiago de Cuba is the second city of Cuba, in the east, known for its music, heat and rebel history. The roots of son and many Cuban dances lie in this region. The Santiago Carnival in July is the most important of the island. The Virgin of Charity of El Cobre is the patron saint of Cuba.

Carnival and conga

In July, the carnival fills the streets with congas, large drum groups that parade with trumpets and costumes, and dancers in sequins. The Tumba Francesa, a dance of Haitian origin, is recognised by UNESCO. The Virgin of Charity of El Cobre is celebrated on 8 September, with pilgrims to the shrine.

At the table

Congrí, rice and red beans, chicharrones, and tamales de maíz are common. Dulce de coco, cake of coconut, and Cuban coffee are enjoyed. Rum from the Bacardi brewery began here in 1862. Casabe, a flatbread of cassava, goes back to Taíno days.

Signature traditions of Santiago de Cuba

Also part of it, and being written: Our Lady of Charity (The Virgin.), Son cubano (The music.).
