Traditions of Thessaloniki

A northern port with a Byzantine heritage, a Feast of Saint Demetrius, and a famous bakery and sweet culture.

Thessaloniki is the second city of Greece, a port of mixed heritage of Greek, Ottoman, Jewish and Slavic peoples. Its Byzantine churches, markets and promenade are a place of daily strolling. The Feast of Saint Demetrius in October is its patron festival, and the Demetria festival of arts follows.

Saint Demetrius and the Anastenaria

In the days around 26 October, the church of Agios Dimitrios fills with worshippers who light candles and are blessed. In the villages near Thessaloniki, the fire-walking Anastenaria ritual, performed on the feast of Saints Constantine and Helen in May, has dancers with icons walking barefoot on embers.

At the table

Bougatsa, a custard pastry with powdered sugar, is the traditional breakfast. Koulouri Thessalonikis, sesame bread rings, are sold on the street, and trigona panoramatos is a pastry of syrup and cream. Meze with ouzo and tsipouro are enjoyed in tavernas. Mastic and salep are drunk in winter.

Also part of it, and being written: Bougatsa (The pastry.), Koulouri (The bread ring.), Ouzo (The anise spirit.).
