Traditions of Tirana

A colourful capital where besa, the honour of hospitality, is the rule and Dita e Verës marks the arrival of summer.

Tirana is the capital of Albania, a country with a code of hospitality called besa, a word of honour, and of the Kanun, the traditional law of the northern mountains. Albanians keep festivals such as Dita e Verës in March, with a spring cake, and strong traditions of polyphonic singing in the south.

Besa and Summer Day

Besa means to keep faith: a guest is treated as a friend of God, and a host will protect them. On 14 March, Dita e Verës, Albanians bake ballokume, cookies of cornmeal and butter, and picnic in parks to mark the arrival of summer. Iso-polyphony from the south, in which a drone supports voices, is recognised by UNESCO.

At the table

Byrek, a flaky pie of spinach or cheese, and tavë kosi, baked lamb in yoghurt, are Albanian dishes. Fërgesë, peppers and cottage cheese, and raki, a grape brandy, are shared. A strong, small coffee is drunk at every meeting. Baklava is baked at Eid and at Christmas.

Signature traditions of Tirana

Also part of it, and being written: Iso-polyphony (The singing.), Byrek (The pie.), Rakia (The spirit.).
