Traditions of Vilnius

A baroque capital with a Kaziuko fair each March, amber, linen and a table of potato dishes.

Vilnius is the capital of Lithuania, with one of the largest old towns in Europe, a legacy of Catholic, Jewish and Orthodox communities. The Kaziukas Fair on the Sunday nearest 4 March, held since the seventeenth century, sells handicrafts, including the verbos, palms of dried flowers, and gingerbread hearts.

Kaziukas fair and Joninės

At Kaziukas, craftsmen from all over the country set up stalls of woven goods, wooden toys, pottery and honey. The Joninės, or Saint John's festival, on 23 June, is marked with wreaths floating on the river, a search for the fern flower and bonfires. Sutartinės, a style of polyphonic singing, are recognised by UNESCO.

At the table

Cepelinai, potato dumplings stuffed with meat, šaltibarščiai, cold beetroot soup, and kugelis, potato pudding, are the classics. Šakotis, a tree-shaped cake, is a wedding cake. Midus, mead, and gira, a fermented rye drink, are old drinks. Amber is sold everywhere.
