Traditions of Apia

The capital of Samoa, where chiefs, tatau and the fa'a Samoa way shape life.

Apia is on the north coast of Upolu, in Samoa. The fa'a Samoa, the Samoan way, emphasises family, church and respect for chiefs, the matai. Villages meet in a fale, an open house, and many families keep customs of gift exchange with fine mats, ie toga.

Chiefs, tatau and fine mats

The tatau, Samoan tattooing, is performed by master tattooists with traditional tools of bone, and has strong ceremonial roots. The male pe'a goes from waist to knee. Fine mats woven from pandanus are given at weddings and funerals. Siva Samoa is a graceful dance performed at celebrations, often by the taupou, a village maiden.

At the table

A Sunday umu, earth oven, bakes taro, breadfruit, fish and pork. Palusami is taro leaf with coconut cream, and oka is raw fish with coconut. Koko Samoa is a hot cocoa drink, and koko alaisa is a sweet rice porridge for breakfast. Food is shared after church, as the day is one of rest.
