Traditions of Dili

The capital of Timor-Leste, where Catholic devotion and ancestral house traditions live side by side.

Dili is a small harbour capital facing the Banda Sea. Most Timorese are Catholic, but older beliefs in ancestral spirits remain strong in the sacred houses, the uma lulik, found in many villages. Tais, hand-woven cloth, carries clan and regional patterns and is used in all major life events.

Tais and the sacred house

Tais cloths are given at weddings, births and funerals and are worn in ceremonies. The uma lulik, a house with a high thatched roof, holds sacred objects and is a place where clans gather. Holy Week processions in Dili draw large crowds, and the Santa Cruz commemoration is a day of memory.

At the table

Ikan sabuko, fish grilled with tamarind, and batar da'an, a stew of corn, beans and pumpkin, are traditional meals. Coffee is a pride of the country and is grown in the mountains. Rice and cassava with fish form the daily table, and people use their hands.
