Traditions of Kyiv

The mother of Ukrainian cities, with golden domes, embroidered vyshyvanka shirts and the Christmas Eve table of twelve dishes.

Kyiv is the capital of Ukraine and one of the oldest cities in Eastern Europe, the centre of the medieval Kyivan Rus state. Ukrainians cherish the vyshyvanka, an embroidered shirt, the pysanka, a decorated Easter egg, and Petrykivka painting. Christmas Eve, Sviata Vecheria, is a ritual meal.

Vyshyvanka and Sviata Vecheria

Each year, Ukrainians dress in embroidered shirts on Vyshyvanka Day in May. On Christmas Eve, after the first star is seen, families sit to twelve meatless dishes, including kutia, a wheat porridge with honey and poppy seed, with an extra place for the ancestors. A didukh, a sheaf of wheat, is placed in the house.

At the table

Borshch, a beetroot soup with sour cream, varenyky, dumplings, holubtsi, cabbage rolls, and salo, cured fat, are central. Paska, a decorated Easter bread, is blessed in church. Chicken Kyiv was born in the city. Horilka, a spirit with pepper, is poured at a feast.
