Traditions of Luxor

The city of Karnak and the Valley of the Kings, where the moulid of Abu al-Haggag echoes a pharaonic festival.

Luxor stands on the site of ancient Thebes, a capital of the pharaohs. Its great temples, Karnak and Luxor, line the Nile. Local people keep their own festivals within and beside the ancient stones, and Upper Egyptian customs of music, stick fighting and hospitality remain strong.

The moulid of Abu al-Haggag

Each year a Sufi saint's birthday is marked by a procession of boats and carts carried through the town, with horses and stick dancers, tahtib. The festival is held within the Luxor temple compound, where a mosque stands inside an ancient hall. Many believe the procession echoes the ancient Opet festival.

At the table

Upper Egyptian food includes pigeon stuffed with rice and wheat, fiteer, flaky pastry layered with cheese, and the staple of baladi bread. Sugarcane juice is sold at street stalls, and dates and hibiscus drinks are common. Tea is poured sweet and strong, and guests are never allowed to leave hungry.
