Athens has been inhabited for over three thousand years, and the Acropolis rises over a modern capital of cafes and neighbourhood life. Easter and name days

On Holy Saturday at midnight, the priest declares Christos Anesti, Christ is risen, and the crowd lights candles from a flame and cries out, with fireworks. The next day, lambs are roasted on spits. On 15 August, the Dormition of the Virgin is marked by pilgrimages. Plate smashing is rare but spirited dances, such as the syrtaki, are danced.

At the table

Greek meze include dolmades, tzatziki, saganaki, grilled octopus and horiatiki, the village salad. Souvlaki is the common street food. Magiritsa is eaten after the Easter vigil, and tsoureki is a braided sweet bread with a red egg. Coffee is Greek, boiled in a briki and read for fortune.
