Traditions of Guadalajara

The home of mariachi and tequila, whose Charreada, jarabe tapatío and birria are national emblems.

Guadalajara is the capital of Jalisco, birthplace of mariachi, the charro and the Mexican hat dance. The nearby town of Tequila produces the national spirit, and the agave landscape is a UNESCO site. Mariachi plays at weddings, birthdays and serenades, and each September the city hosts a mariachi festival.

Mariachi and charrería

A mariachi ensemble of violins, trumpets, guitar and a bass guitarrón plays songs of love, pride and humour, in a tradition on UNESCO's list. Charros, horsemen, compete in the charreada, with roping and riding. The jarabe tapatío, the hat dance, is danced by a couple in regional dress.

At the table

Birria, a goat or beef stew in chile broth, and tortas ahogadas, pork sandwiches drowned in spicy sauce, are famous. Tequila and a beer-based drink, a tejuino, are drunk. Cajeta, a goat milk caramel, and bionico, fruit with cream, are sweets.

Also part of it, and being written: Charreada (The rodeo.), Jarabe tapatío (The dance.), Tequila (The spirit.).
